We live in a world full of codes. Not only books and magazines but also traffic signs or lights guide our understanding of the world. Adding digital images and tables or television and films, your orientation within this codified world easily gets lost.

Media philosopher Vilém Flusser throws a little light on our darkness. He starts with the assumption that all humans are freed from the natural world order and, therefore, have to create their own world by codes.

Flusser does not start with the spoken language but with cave paintings. From his viewpoint, this is the first step of alienation from the world. The caveman does not perceive the world as it is but a mystical world that is based on simultaneousness. In a picture everything appears at once. And the eye perceives it by circling around its surface.
